🎨
Pick a metricUse the Metric box (search or pick) to shade every polygon by a topic — demographics, MCAS, spending, or Lynn-tract census & health figures.
🗺️
Switch the level“Color polygons at” swaps between MA municipalities, school districts, and Lynn's 22 census tracts. Tract metrics are Lynn-only.
📊
Read the legendThe legend explains the colors and a plain-language caption says what darker vs. lighter means. It updates whenever you change the metric.
⇄
Compare two metricsTurn on “Compare two metrics (bivariate)” to shade each polygon by the combination of two topics on a 3×3 grid.
🏫
Spotlight the schoolsEvery Lynn school is a dot (size = enrollment). Recolor the dots by demographic, or spotlight Lynn English High — this project's focus school, marked with a gold ring.

Data comes from MA DESE, the U.S. Census / ACS, CDC PLACES, and MassGIS. Full credits live under “Sources” at the bottom of the panel. For the full statewide picture, see the MA Education Atlas.
- Census tract
- A small Census-defined neighborhood area (Lynn has 22). Tract metrics here are Census/ACS & health figures, available for Lynn only.
- Choropleth
- A map that shades each area by a value — darker (or more intense) color means a higher number.
- Bivariate
- A choropleth showing two metrics at once on a 3×3 color grid, so you can see where both are high, both low, or mixed.
- Jenks / Quantile classification
- Ways of grouping values into color classes. Jenks (natural breaks) finds natural gaps; Quantile puts an equal count of areas in each class.
- MCAS
- Massachusetts' statewide student test (grades 3–8 and 10). “% M+E” is the share Meeting or Exceeding expectations.
- Per-pupil $
- Dollars spent per student, per year.
- EL (English Learner)
- Students still learning English.
- Low Income
- Students from economically disadvantaged households (DESE definition).
- SWD (Students with Disabilities)
- Students with an active Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Dropout vs. attrition
- Dropout = students who leave school without graduating. Attrition = any student who leaves a school (transfers, moves), a broader count.
- CDC PLACES health metrics
- Model-based estimates of adult health (obesity, diabetes, asthma, etc.) at the tract level, expressed as a percent of adults.
- ACS
- The Census Bureau's American Community Survey — the source of the tract income, language, education, and housing figures.
- FTE
- Full-Time Equivalent — a way of counting staff so part-timers add up to whole positions.
